BIO

Giovanni Ortoleva nasce a Firenze nel 1991. È autore e regista di teatro e cinema.

Laureato in Psicologia Cognitiva presso l’Università di Trento, si diploma in Regia Teatrale presso la Scuola Paolo Grassi di Milano.

Nel 2016 riceve il premio dell’Università di Roma – Tor Vergata per Quattro paesaggi con figure, un testo sul tentativo del regime nazista di nascondere l’esistenza dei campi di sterminio polacchi. Il testo è stato pubblicato da Progetto Cultura.

Nel 2018 riceve la menzione speciale della Biennale di Venezia all’interno del concorso Registi Under 30, ed è invitato due volte a presentari i suoi lavori al Festival. Nel 2019 vi debutta Saul da André Gide (scritto insieme a Riccardo Favaro) e nel 2020 I rifiuti, la città e la morte di R. W. Fassbinder, entrambi prodotti dal Teatro della Tosse di Genova (il primo in collaborazione con Teatro i e Arca Azzurra).

A Novembre 2021 debutta a Genova La tragica storia del dottor Faust, liberamente tratto da Christopher Marlowe, al Teatro della Tosse; con questo lavoro chiude una trilogia di lavori sulle figure che si sono ribellate a Dio.

Nel 2022 inizia un percorso di ricerca sui miti dell’amore romantico che lo porta a realizzare Lancillotto e Ginevra (scritto con R. Favaro) presso il Teatro Metastasio di Prato e La dodicesima notte (o quello che volete) di William Shakespeare presso il LAC di Lugano. La trilogia si chiude nel 2024 con La signora delle camelie, liberamente tratto da Dumas figlio, prodotto da Teatro della Tosse, TPE di Torino, Elsinor e Arca Azzurra, attualmente al secondo anno di tournée.

Nel 2023 viene chiamato dall’Istituto del Dramma Popolare di San Miniato a dirigere la produzione del festival di quell’anno, Dramma industriale (Firenze, 1953) di Riccardo Favaro.

Dal 2024 insegna all’Accademia nazionale d’arte drammatica Silvio D’Amico di Roma. Nel 2024 dirige il primo saggio del Biennio di Recitazione, Risveglio di Primavera di Frank Wedekind, che debutta alla 67esima edizione del Festival di Spoleto; nel 2025 dirige il terzo anno del corso Triennale di Recitazione in Fassbinder Zeitgeist, che debutta alla 68esima edizione del Festival di Spoleto. Dal 2025 insegna alla Scuola del Teatro Stabile di Torino e alla Scuola del Teatro Stabile di Napoli.

Nel 2021 il suo cortometraggio Autoritratto con arma, con cui debutta nel cinema, viene selezionato dal Torino Film Festival e riceve il Premio Ermanno Olmi.

Nel 2025 vince il Premio ANCT (Associazione Nazionale Critici di Teatro) per il suo percorso da regista.

Del suo lavoro il New York Times ha scritto che “dimostra una promessa e un’immaginazione degni di nota.”

BIO

Giovanni Ortoleva was born in Florence in 1991. After graduating in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Trento, he received the degree in Theatre Direction at the Civic School of Theatre Paolo Grassi in Milan.

 

In 2016 he won the first prize in the dramaturgy contest held by the University of Rome with “Four landscapes with figures”, a play about the attempts of the nazi regime to hide the existence of Polish death camps. The text was then published by Progetto cultura.

 

In 2018 he was awarded with the special mention from the Biennale of Venice in the “Under 30 Directors” competition and was then invited to present two shows at the Venice Festival: in 2019 he presented Saul, a rereading of André Gide’s tragedy written together with Riccardo Favaro, and in 2020 Trash, city and death by R. W. Fassbinder. Both shows were produced by Teatro della Tosse (Genua), the first in coproduction with Arca Azzurra and Teatro i (Milan), the second with Theaterdiskounter (Berlin).

 

In 2021 Teatro della Tosse invited Giovanni for a third show and he wrote and directed The tragical history of Doctor Faust, loosely based on Cristopher Marlowe’s, with which he completed his trilogy of works about the mythical figures that rebelled to God.

 

He then starts a new line of research on the myths of romantic love, which brings to the production of Lancelot and Guineviere (2022) at Teatro Metastasio – Prato and The twelfth night (or what you will) (2023) at LAC – Lugano. The trilogy ends with Lady of the Camelias (2024), produced by Teatro della Tosse – Genova, which is still touring.

 

In 2023 he is called by the Istituto del Dramma Popolare to direct their annual production, Industrial drama (Florence, 1953) by Riccardo Favaro. In 2024, he collaborates with the Università di Torino realising the show which inaugurated the celebrations for its 620th anniversary, Splendour and fall of Erasmus from Rotterdam.

 

Since 2024, he has been teaching at the Silvio D’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome. In 2024, he directed the first essay of the Two-Year Acting Course, Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, which debuted at the 67th edition of the Spoleto Festival. in 2025, he directed the third year of the three-year acting course in Fassbinder’s Zeitgeist, which debuted at the 68th edition of the Spoleto Festival. Since 2025, he has been teaching at the Scuola del Teatro Stabile in Turin and the Scuola del Teatro Stabile in Naples.

 

In November 2021, his short-movie Self-portrait with a gun was selected at the Torino Film Festival and awarded with the Ermanno Olmi prize. Self-portrait with a gun is his first work for cinema.

 

He is an associate artist at the Teatro della Tosse for the 2025–2027 period.

 

The New York Times wrote of his work that it “shows remarkable promise and imagination”.
